Complete Itinerary

Day 1Arrival: Catania Airport – Catania City Center: 10 km

Arrival at Catania Fontanarossa Airport. Pick up your rental car, chosen during the booking process. Drive to Catania. Check-in at the hotel or B&B. The afternoon is free for exploring Catania’s historic city center. Recommended sites include Ursino Castle, Piazza Duomo, the fish market (open until 2:00 PM), the Roman Theater, Piazza Stesicoro, and Via dei Crociferi. Enjoy dinner at your leisure and stay overnight.

Day 2Catania – Ragusa: 110 km Ragusa – Modica: 20 km Total: 130 km

After breakfast, your Sicilian road trip begins with the first stop in Ragusa, known as the “City of Bridges” due to its three picturesque and historically significant structures. It has also been referred to by writers, artists, and economists as the “Island within the Island” or “The Other Sicily” because of its unique history and socio-economic context, distinct from the rest of the island. Enjoy lunch at your leisure.

Drive to Modica and check in to your hotel or B&B. Explore Modica, a city with ancient origins. Currently divided into three parts, Modica boasts a historic center of undeniable beauty, characterized by many closely packed houses, often extensions of ancient caves. In fact, there were once about 700 inhabited caves dating back to prehistoric times. Thanks to its historical and monumental heritage, Modica has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Modica is also famous for its spiced chocolate. Return to your hotel in Modica for the evening. Enjoy dinner at your leisure and stay overnight.

Day 3Modica – Syracuse: 80 km Syracuse – Noto: 40 km Noto – Modica: 60 km Total: 180 km

Breakfast at the hotel and departure by car to Syracuse, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most famous attractions is the Archaeological Park, easily accessible by car. Here, you can stroll among ancient stone quarries like the Ear of Dionysius and admire the Greek theater or the Roman amphitheater.

After visiting the Archaeological Park, it’s recommended to drive the short distance to the city center, specifically the Isola di Ortigia district. This is the oldest part of the city, where you’ll find the Baroque Duomo, the only active church in the world built inside a Greek temple (dedicated to the goddess Athena).

After a lunch break, take the state road to Noto, the “capital” of Sicilian Baroque, also called the “Stone Garden” for the unique pinkish local stone used to construct many churches and houses. Among Noto’s many monuments, highlights include the Cathedral of San Nicolò, Palazzo Ducezio (located directly in front of the Cathedral) with its grand colonnade of 11 arches, and more.

Return to the hotel in Modica in the evening. Enjoy dinner at your leisure and stay overnight.

Day 4Modica – Agrigento: 150 km - Agrigento – Scala dei Turchi (round trip): 30 km - Total: 180 km

Today’s leg of our Sicilian road trip takes us to Agrigento. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel or B&B. Enjoy a self-guided visit to the Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site, home to the renowned Temple of Concordia, Temple of Juno, and Temple of Athena.

On the outskirts of the modern city, you’ll find the Regional Archaeological Museum of Agrigento, which houses artifacts and a giant telamon (male statue).

Just a few kilometers west of the city lies the Scala dei Turchi, a unique white stepped cliff overlooking sandy beaches.

Lunch and dinner are at your leisure. Overnight stay in Agrigento.

Day 5Agrigento – Marsala: 140 km Marsala – Trapani: 30 km Trapani – Erice (round trip): 30 km Total: 200 km

Breakfast and departure by car along State Road 115 toward Trapani. While not the shortest route, it offers one of Sicily’s most unique landscapes, passing through Marsala and the scenic salt flats.

Marsala is worth a stop. Enter through Porta Garibaldi to quickly reach the fish market and the 16th-century Spanish Quarter, now home to the town hall. After exploring the charming streets of the historic center, return to your car and head to the nearby salt flats, an iconic site in Western Sicily. You can choose to stop for photos or take a boat to visit Mozia, the Phoenician island with an important museum.

After your visit, continue to your hotel in Trapani for check-in. If time and energy allow, drive the short 10 km to Monte San Giuliano to visit the medieval village of Erice. Enjoy a self-guided tour, then return to your hotel in Trapani. Dinner is at your leisure, followed by an overnight stay in Trapani.

Day 6Trapani – Palermo : 100 km

After breakfast, the journey continues, this time heading east toward Palermo. First, we recommend checking in to your hotel or B&B, allowing you to freely dive into the vibrant atmosphere of Palermo right afterward.

A visit to the city and its famous street food is a must. Don’t miss the local markets, where you can explore customs and traditions through the flavors of culinary specialties such as panelle, sfincione, or stigghiola.

The center of Palermo feels like an open-air museum, where you can admire numerous monuments and artistic treasures, including the magnificent Cathedral and the Norman Palace, featuring the unmissable Palatine Chapel. Dinner is at your leisure, followed by an overnight stay in Palermo.

Day 7Palermo – Messina 225 km; Messina -Taormina A/R 110 km - Total: 335 km

Breakfast. The road trip continues east along Sicily’s northern coast, passing through Cefalù toward Messina, where we will stay for the final night.

The “City of the Strait” is not widely known as a tourist destination but hides a few gems worth exploring. Highlights include the Astronomical Clock in Piazza Duomo, a stroll around the Ganzirri Lakes, or relaxing in the shade of the “Pilone” while admiring the Strait of Messina. Don’t miss tasting one of the city’s iconic specialties: granita al caffè with cream and a brioche col tuppo.

Alternatively, you can hop back in the car and head to Taormina. Here, you can visit Isola Bella, the Greek Theater, the Cathedral, Palazzo Corvaja, and the Villa Comunale. In nearby Giardini Naxos, highlights include the Roman Baths, the Roman Theater, and the Amphitheater.

Lunch and dinner are at your leisure. Return to the hotel in Messina for the night. Overnight stay.

Day 8Departure: Messina – Catania Airport: 100 km
